PreS-Gr 3—Based on the animated cartoon classic, this prose picture book about self-acceptance features Rudolph, along with his pals Hermey, the elf who dreams of becoming a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, a prospector. They escape an Abominable Snow Monster, and end up on the Island of Misfit Toys. After several hair-raising adventures they return to Christmastown and this time, despite their differences, are all welcomed back to the fold. All of this action nearly eclipses the reindeer's famous foggy ride with Santa, but not quite. First stop? The Island of Misfit Toys.—Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public Library
While billed as a "deluxe 50th-anniversary edition" of the beloved TV special, this is a cheapo production with overly airbrushed illustrations and a belabored text: "The ice floe carried them to the island of Misfit Toys, a place filled with odd toys." All poignancy is lost, and nobody sings!
