PreS-Gr 1–Kid the goat “is a wee little lad, but stubborn and wild, say Mama and Dad.” Kid is one of three little goats in the family. He wants to do his own thing and cannot sit still, do chores, or appreciate his Christmas gift like his siblings. His stubbornness eventually gets him into trouble, and he misses out on all the fun playing outside. Luckily Mama comes to his rescue—just in time for the Christmas play, but not before Kid learns a valuable lesson. Colorful and cute illustrations brighten the pages, which feature a family preparing for Christmas in their home and engaging in activities outside in a winter landscape. Longer, fast rhyming phrases depicting typical parent and child interactions with a bit of drama are mixed in to keep readers engaged. The last page features Kid and his parents watching a traditional Christian nativity play.
VERDICT For slightly older board book readers, a great addition to Christmas collections.
