Gr 4–6—When 10-year-old Pip is deemed too old for the orphanage and sold into labor on what he fears is a pirate ship, he stows away in the caravan of the Stage Fright Theatre Company. When the caravan stops, he finds himself in Hangman's Hollow, a place he thought only existed in dark, twisted fairy tales. It's a desolate place where children are hidden away lest they be stolen by the wood witches of the surrounding forest. Pip immediately draws the attention of the wood witches' servants and finds himself fighting for not just his life, but also for the lives of two more stolen children. Mould's eerie black-and-white sketches enhance the story and add to the tone of mystery and danger. A short, suspenseful tale.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA
