Gr 9 UpThis volume updates the latest entry in curated lists for librarians. This edition focuses on more than 2,100 fiction and nonfiction comics and graphic novels for all ages, professional resources, and a selection of nonfiction prose about comics history. It is an abridged version of an EBSCO database. Each section features tabbed pages to help readers navigate. This work continues to emphasize equity, diversity, and inclusion and has been weeded to ensure that older, outdated books are removed and replaced with more recent titles. The entries highlighted also include mentions of awards and other recognition. A star indicates that a book is an Essential title in a given category or subject. Non-starred entries represent Recommended titles. Collection development specialists with expertise in graphic novels and comics developed these lists that include bilingual materials and international works that have been translated to English, such as Japanese manga, Korean manhwa, Franco-Belgian comics (bandes dessinées), and others. Each listing consists of a bibliographical description and includes, where relevant, series names and publication history. Most titles feature a summary and a review excerpt from a quoted source. The Index is now a single combined index of all the books entered in the Core Collection. Each book is entered under author, title, series, and subject. There are no visuals to break up the text, which is a disservice to such an illustrated medium. However, the valuable information will still satisfy readers.
VERDICT This work is most useful for refreshing collections, reader advisories, and book displays.
