Gr 4-8–A highly readable compendium on the U.S. presidents. The colorful and glossy pages present profiles of presidents grouped in chronological order. A brief essay at each chapter opening explains the common themes shared by the presidents within these groupings, accompanied by an illustrated time line that introduces readers to important events of the period. The profiles run from two to six pages and include a reproduction of the Presidential portrait, a fact box, and highlights of the leader’s career, significance to U.S. history, childhood, and more. The entries evenly explore the highs and lows of each presidency, with successes and failures. Andrew Jackson’s pages highlight his “man of the people” reputation as the “People’s President,” but also how he defied the Supreme Court by ignoring its support of the Cherokee people when he forced Native Americans to move against their will. Spreads on pertinent topics, such as the electoral college and the three branches of government, are also placed throughout. Students can read this cover to cover, by browsing, or for reports. The design is dynamic without overcrowding the page. Each section has accompanying illustrations and design elements, such as political cartoons, charts, photos, and quotations, that will keep kids engaged and informed. Back matter features a chart of election results since 1825, bibliography, index, and further reading. This update of Ann Bausum’s 2021 edition is worth purchasing for the new chapters on the 2024 elections alone.
VERDICT A great choice for middle school U.S. history curriculum and reference sections.
