Gr 10 Up–An all-encompassing deep dive into the science of healthy eating and its relationship to everyday people through asking and answering questions about the efficacy of popular diets, healthy eating trends, and misconceptions about food. The author goes beyond basic nutrition education to explore relatable issues that interest readers, such as the debate over eggs and meat being healthy and how barriers such as food cravings, dislike of nutritious food, and confusing and misleading food labels make it difficult to eat healthy. The book opens with an engaging case study about Samantha, a 13-year-old who, through perseverance and initiative, works to manage her diabetes diagnosis. Her story draws readers in by presenting a teenager with whom they can identify. However, her story and other stories like hers are rarely mentioned in this book that seems to cater to an adult audience rather than to young readers by providing information on topics—such as alcoholism and osteoporosis—which may not be as pressing as healthy eating from a young adult’s perspective. The information provided is comprehensive and covers every food-related topic, but material will be difficult for young readers to process. Long, wordy passages are not broken into chunks or separated by headings. No visual cues, such as graphs, charts, or images are available.
VERDICT Although this thorough and well-researched book successfully asks and answers almost every question about diets, healthy eating, and the science that ties it all together, it’s written primarily for a sophisticated adult audience with formatting issues that make the book less accessible to young readers.
