YA Online “Serial Anthology” Crowdfunding Campaign Launches

YA authors Emily X.R. Pan and Nova Ren Suma kick-start a crowdfunding campaign for online short story anthology.

New York Times best-selling authors Emily X.R. Pan and Nova Ren Suma have been busy. Not only has each published a YA novel in 2018—Pan’s debut The Astonishing Color of After and Suma’s forthcoming A Room Away from the Wolves—but they recently launched an online platform for young adult short stories by new and established authors.

In celebration of the publication of sneak-peek Issue 00, now live on the website, the pair has also started an Indiegogo campaign to fund FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology for 2019. The crowdfunding push is running from August 1 to September 15, with a goal of $16,000. Supporters can earn perks that range from stickers and totes to Skype visits and manuscript critiques for their donations.

“Too often, creatives are told that they have to give away their work for free when they're in the beginning stages of building their careers. This is especially true of art that is shared on the internet,” the authors explain on the Indiegogo site. “We call BS. Our priority is to pay the authors being published for the first time just as much money as the rock-star authors whose names you already know. And we hope to raise even more than we need for that, so that we can also give our amazing volunteer staff honorariums to thank them for their amazing work.”

Pan and Suma hope to publish a new issue featuring three stellar YA stories monthly in 2019. Among these will be original work from acclaimed writers, such Dhonielle Clayton (The Belles) and Samantha Mabry (All the Wind in the World), who are both showcased in the anthology’s preview issue. Each installment will also include an emerging voice selected by authors like Nicola Yoon, Adam Silvera, and many more.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHORS TO LAUNCH CROWDFUND CAMPAIGN FOR NEW ONLINE YA SERIAL ANTHOLOGY

FORESHADOW: A YA SERIAL ANTHOLOGY TO RELEASE IN JANUARY 2019

NEW YORK, NY [August 1, 2018] — Emily X.R. Pan (The Astonishing Color of After)and Nova Ren Suma (The Walls Around Us), launched the Indiegogo campaign for FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology today. The online-only project is set to run from January-December 2019. Each issue will include three young adult stories, by established and emerging authors alike, one always from a new voice thoughtfully selected by rock-star authors like Nicola Yoon, Laurie Halse Anderson, Adam Silvera, Becky Albertalli, Jason Reynolds, Rita WiIlliams-Garcia, Cynthia Leitch Smith, Gayle Forman and many others to be announced. Issue 00 is live on the site now, providing readers a sneak peek of what’s in store for 2019. It contains work by Dhonielle Clayton (New York Times bestselling author ofThe Belles), Samantha Mabry (author of All the Wind in the World, longlisted for the National Book Award), and a young never-before-published writer named Nora Elghazzawi, whose story was specially chosen and blurbed by #1 New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Nicola Yoon.

Inspired by the lack of online publishing opportunities specifically for YA short stories, and especially the lack of paid opportunities, Pan and Suma wanted to publish great writing and make it accessible to anyone in the world, free to read in its entirety, to help people discover exciting new voices. The duo hopes to prove through FORESHADOW that publishing can and should look diverse on both sides of the curtain, and that everyone deserves to be paid for their creative work.

“The initial response has already been incredible. The support from so many fellow authors and members of the publishing community has proved to us that this project is doing exactly what we hoped—contributing towards filling the huge gap that still exists in the literary world,” said Emily. “I am especially excited by the idea that perhaps literary agents looking to expand their YA rosters will use FORESHADOW to search out new writers.”

“My first-ever publication was a short story in a small literary journal and it ended up opening doors for me. I like to imagine FORESHADOW as a new kind of open door and opportunity for YA writers. This is the most exciting part for me: discovering talented, unique, diverse voices who are worthy of being heard and offering them perhaps their first-ever place to publish,” said Nova.

The crowdfund campaign is expected to run from August 1-September 15.

ABOUT FORESHADOW:

The purpose of FORESHADOW: A Serial YA Anthology is to offer a unique new online venue for young adult short stories, with a commitment to showcasing underrepresented voices, boosting emerging writers, and highlighting the beauty and power of YA fiction. For each month of 2019, we will publish a new issue featuring three stellar YA stories. Among these will be original work from acclaimed writers, plus brand-new voices you haven’t heard from before who have been specially selected by your favorite authors. As foreshadowing in storytelling is a way of imagining and prefiguring what’s to come, we hope that the new writers you’ll discover in our online serial anthology will be authors whose books you’ll covet tomorrow.
