My Roommate from Hell by Cale Dietrich. Wednesday Bks. ISBN 9781250887788.
Gr 9 Up–This queer paranormal rom-com is one to watch. Owen and Zarmenus are college roommates who couldn’t be more different from one another. While Owen is a human young man who grew up seeing his artistic parents struggle to make ends meet, the handsome Zarmenus is a demon and a literal prince of Hell, here on the world’s first interdimensional exchange program. In this story, Hell is an alternate dimension accessible through a portal, not a world of nightmares where humans are punished for eternity. Currently, Hell is dealing with a PR problem, so the relationship between Zarmenus and Owen is under a microscope from the dean and the rest of the world. The kind of conflict to be expected between dissimilar people living together is omnipresent: Owen is a virgin who’s never been kissed and believes in cleanliness and order, while Zarmenus is a huge slob who is confident, experienced, and no stranger to hookup culture. A public fight leads to Zarmenus dragging Owen into a fake dating scheme to appease his parents. When the fake dating leads to real feelings, the chemistry is delightful. The character details make this story exceptional. While it takes place in college, the romantic scenes never go above PG-13. VERDICT A highly recommended cozy read. Hand this one to fans of Aiden Thomas and Becky Albertalli.–Meghan Sanford
Not Today, Satan by Samantha Joyce. Entangled Teen. ISBN 9781649378767.
Gr 10 Up–In this fast-paced retelling of Dante’s Inferno, Joyce creates a fearless Princess of Hell and a boy who cracks jokes even at the edge of death. Devica, Princess of Hell, is set to take the throne on her 18th birthday, but she doesn’t really want to. On one of her shifts at the Welcome Hall, she meets human Nathan Reynolds, who is possibly wrongfully sentenced to Hell. Together, Devica and Nate must journey out of Hell and back to Earth. With the ruse of saving Nate, Dev frees him from his lot, and they help each other escape death. Devica struggles with the fact that she is a demon and has to punish human sinners, but her human side relates too much for her comfort with Nate. The beginning has a clear map of Hell that’s easy to understand. This fast-paced emotional roller-coaster filled with twists and turns is funny and light, but also gory and pulls at the heartstrings. Trigger warnings included. Race of the characters is not mentioned. VERDICT Great for readers who enjoyed Becca Fitzpatrick’s “Hush Hush” series, those who prefer quick reads, and individuals who enjoy supernatural elements in their books.–Autumn West
