Tim Jones, library media specialist at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Louisville, KY, is the 2025 School Librarian of the Year.

Jones has built a connection with students and created a library space for fun and learning. In less than two years at the school, he has enacted a variety of innovative programs that draw students into the library while modernizing and expanding the collection and creating a makerspace stocked with coding toys and STEM kits.

The School Librarian of the Year Award, presented annually by SLJ and sponsored by Scholastic, recognizes the outstanding work of K–12 library professionals who have consistently demonstrated exceptional use of technology and print materials to not only successfully engage students in learning but also spark new ideas within their school and community.

This year, two finalists were selected: Tatanisha Love, library media specialist at Southwest Academy Magnet School for Science and Engineering in Baltimore, MD; and Jennifer Mathews, instructional media technology specialist librarian at Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind in Colorado Springs, CO.

“Tim Jones is an exemplar of the profession, inspiring us all with his innovative work supporting student learning. And he does so with tremendous heart, a model of positivity and possibility among his fellow educators and students alike—a true beacon in these challenging times," says Kathy Ishizuka, SLJ editor-in-chief. “SLJ is pleased to share the good work of our honorees, underscoring the vital role of librarians in fostering multiple literacies and critical thinking skills in our nation’s schools.”

The 2025 School Librarian of the Year judges are: Amanda Chacon, 2024 School Librarian of the Year; Kevin Washburn, director, library programs, DC Public Schools; a Scholastic representative; and SLJ editors.
