Gr 5-8–Origami is centuries old; it started in Japan after Buddhist monks brought paper to the country during the sixth century. A brief history of the art of paper folding is featured as well as information about a range of projects. Illustrated instructions are provided, including how to make an origami mouse, an iguanodon, a winged plane, a rocket, boxes, and complex geometric shapes. Each project is accompanied by photographs of the actual object or animal. Well-chosen images are useful for visual learners. Readers are encouraged to use any kind of paper (though gorgeous origami paper is shown). The “Getting Started” section clearly explains how to interpret instructions before specific projects are detailed. Projects are numbered, but many are complex and will require patience and close attention. Overall, the wide scope of creations is attractively presented.
VERDICT Although not an essential addition, this is a serviceable option for those who need more sophisticated craft books.
