Gr 2 Up–As a trainer architect, Tentler-Krylov’s imagination has always been fueled by urban landscapes, and in this lushly illustrated and informative book, she shows readers how 14 cities around the world are responding to climate change. Four cities each in Europe and North America are featured, three in Asia, and one apiece in Africa, Australia, and South America. The responses of each city are determined by its vulnerability to climate change, an effort to become greener in a warming world, or the restoration of a local habitat that was not appreciated until it was destroyed. Every lively drawing of a city shows multiracial individuals living and working in the greener urban landscapes and conveys a celebration of the architectural and natural beauty in that city. Adults as well as students will be impressed by the innovative local solutions, from buses with green roofs in Singapore to skyscrapers being built with timber in Vancouver to islands made of recycled plastic in Rotterdam to movable gates to prevent flooding in Venice and London. There is a short verbal description of each project as well as detailed inset drawings on some pages to explain the mechanics of certain projects. End pages contain climate action websites and a selected bibliography.
VERDICT An inspiring look at architectural, engineering, and community creativity in response to climate change.
