Gr 1-3–As in their previous collaboration, Digger, Dozer, Dumper, Vestergaard pairs with Slonim to create an accessible introduction to tools. Safety is emphasized from start (“Always ask a grown-up for help”) to finish. Simple verses introduce each tool, and a trio of child helpers demonstrate safe usage: a boy with glasses, light brown skin and black hair; a girl with dark brown skin and curly black hair; and a blond boy with pale skin. They wear safety goggles and gloves, and a helpful pooch sports a tool belt, with a dog treat tucked among the tools. Cartoonish illustrations, done in acrylic and charcoal on illustration board, depict tools with eyes and comic expressions, including a glum bent nail.
VERDICT This lively overview is straightforward and engaging and will encourage young readers to dream of what they can create.
