PreS-Gr 2–A young boy is enthralled by capybaras. He tells his friend his plan to ask for a capybara for his birthday, and together, they go on a journey of learning capybara (and other animal) facts. Ranging from short-lived animal fads to how capybaras interact in the wild, this text is dense with information that would be easily absorbed by emerging readers. The character learns throughout the text that not all animals are safe to keep as pets, and sets his sights on one of capybara’s close relatives as his desired companion. The art style used to depict the animals is charming and supports the animal facts presented along with the illustrations, though the art style for humans can be distracting. The variation of each page layout supports the flow of information, and readers will enjoy learning about all types of rodents through this book.
VERDICT This book will draw fans of capybaras and will serve as a great introduction to the graphic novel format.
