Gr 4–7—This volume is a collection of mostly black-and-white weather-related photographs from the Museum of Modern Art, interspersed with Kalman's colorful paintings based on famous photographs. Handler's prose springs off the central question, "What is the weather like where you are?," with a grouping of images for each weather condition. The use of white space and the placement of photographs on the page focus the eye, while Handler's minimalist musings offer a playful guide through a broad topic. The simplicity of the text will lend itself to lively cross-curricular classroom discussion. The end pages provide a complete index to the photographs for further study. Although this small, cloth-bound volume would easily fit in small hands, older students are likely to get more out of this work.
VERDICT A niche selection, but overall a thoughtfully executed introduction to weather in art. Consider wherever this duo are popular.
