Puffins!

PreS-Gr 2–Presented with graphic novel flair, this nonfiction picture book follows the action-packed life of a puffin, from its egg to a nest of its own. Readers will cheer for the puffling as her parents work to feed their hungry baby, as she dodges predators, and when she finally takes her first leap into adulthood. The storyline does not shy away from the ­daily challenges of life on Eastern Egg Island or the effects of climate change. Gianferrari (Fungi Grow) creates an accurate picture of the puffin experience, always tempered by humor. This endearing story is followed by three comic-style pages of puffin facts and information about bird observation on the island. Wicks’s graphic novel ­influence is felt throughout, presented in a combination of panels and full-page pencil and digital illustrations. The images immerse readers in island life, from the noisy sounds of the many bird species to the sparkling ocean waves. Her skill with color and storytelling through pictures is effective.
