Gr 3–5—In this second book in trilogy, Monacello is an ugly, pasty-faced orphan who lives in Naples, in the city's basement, with his friend Napolina and his cats. The mysterious Napolina works to keep Monacello from mischief, but the "Little Monk" is always causing chaos. He is blamed for bad fortunes (dropping a jug of milk, bread not rising) and wished upon for good deeds (an old lady wishing for a horse, a man wishing to be the duke), coining him the Wish-Bringer to the citizens of Naples. Monacello's wish granting never goes right and always has unintended consequences for the wishers. This book has a slightly disjointed story line with a disturbing ending, and illustrations that are dark and eerie. Additional purchase only.—Lisa Nabel, Dayton Metro Library, OH
