Toddler-PreS–True to its title, this bilingual nonfiction board book teaches young readers just how bunnies learn and grow. It begins with newborn bunnies, highlighting early habits, such as snuggling with siblings, nursing from their mother, and wiggling. It concludes with the little bunnies growing up to be big bunnies that love to play with friends. Notably, all bunnies are shown in captivity. Spanish translations are positioned above the English text, separated by a simple leaf motif, allowing for the Spanish text to be read first. Select action words, such as “
¡parpadean, parpadean!” and “
¡Mastican, mastican!,” are italicized, sparking an opportunity to act them out and build word association. Schimler-Safford’s mixed-media illustrations, rendered in soft pastel tones, create a gentle yet textured visual experience that complements the simple but matter-of-fact text. The back matter provides four pages of facts, such as what baby rabbits are called (kits) and what bunnies can and cannot eat, extending the book’s educational value.
VERDICT A more fact-driven but engaging introduction to bunnies. Ideal for themed, bilingual story times or early Spanish nonfiction collections.
