Gr 4-7–Spring break has arrived, and Oli and his family are participating in a special camp to help youth with autism be better able to identify with and respond to emotions in themselves and others. On the first day of HERO Club, Oli notices a stray dog near the meeting venue, and the safety of the dog becomes a primary focus in Oli’s head. When it seems the adults are not as concerned for the dog as Oli would hope, Oli turns to his new friends for help. Together, Oli and his companions combine their unique talents and become a remarkable team of unlikely heroes. This middle grade novel is told from Oli’s perspective in the first person, which immerses readers in his experiences both inside and outside his head. Oli’s thoughts are clear and complete, emphasizing the sounds and sensations that are so profound in his daily experience. Built on the foundation of an empowering story for young people, this novel offers readers the ability to step into Oli’s world and see through his eyes, whether they are autistic or not. Occasional British phrasing may be unfamiliar to some, but this does not adversely impact the storytelling. Brief chapters and a compelling delivery make this book well suited to its intended age group.
VERDICT This well-designed, empowering tale invites middle grade readers into the perspective of one autistic youth and will appeal to individuals, classrooms, and book clubs alike.
