Gr 8 Up–Morrow’s debut offers both fake dating and enemies-to-lovers tropes to swoon over in this sapphic romance, and they both sparkle in a new way. Lizzie and Parker can’t stand each other—they can’t even sit at the same lunch table without getting into arguments about every little thing. Lizzie wants to play in the orchestra and go unseen, while Parker is out, proud, and loud, a fashionista and serial dater. They are so opposite except for two things—they can’t stay in a relationship for more than a week and they share the same best friend. And so Camille, having had enough of their bickering, dares them to date each other for a month to find out what really makes them terrible at relationships. The teens agree in the hopes they can learn something about themselves and also stop hurting Camille. Both girls quickly learn that the other is nothing as she seems. As they start communicateing and figuring out what it means to be a good partner, they also learn how to stand up for themselves, to their families and bullies in their lives. And just maybe, love can blossom in unexpected places.
VERDICT Using the backdrop of a school musical, Morrow integrates a whole cast of characters with a variety of backgrounds to create wonderful scenes and dialogue that gets straight to the heart of teen issues and wanting to fit in; the sweetly written romance is lovely in how it surprises both protagonists.
