PreS-Gr 1–“A dare to scratch and sniff” mystery that will surely delight, or disgust readers with the offered smells. The World Famous Rotten Egg has gone missing at the Museum of Very Bad Smells and the detective on the case, a clever hamster, has a series of suspects lined up and ready for investigation. Page by page, clues and smells (not smelled due to digital review copy) are gathered as a crab, a dung beetle, a dog, and a lactose intolerant mouse are interrogated. Illustrations capture the chase, witty dialogue brings the investigation to life, and through it all there are the scents. Barf, dung, rotten fish, and other smells are all shared in the pages of this funny, and odiferous, winning title from the creator of last year’s delight, Mr. S.
VERDICT Not for everyone, but kids will clamor to get a whiff of this mystery that is right on the nose. Great fun! Highly recommended.
