Peony's love of baking and books (and distaste for frilly dresses) causes great frustration for her parents and governess. When she discovers that her despotic father has had the local librarian imprisoned, Peony offers up the first verbal challenge the King seems to have ever faced—and he punishes her for it, putting her in the dungeon. There, with the help of the librarian and a would-be court jester, Peony plans her escape. Kissi's illustrations, angular yet playful, successfully capture the mischievous, contemporary feel of the story.
VERDICT French's blending of familiar fairy-tale tropes with the story of a smart princess results in a romp that will delight readers not quite ready to tackle longer middle grade novels like Ella Enchanted.
