PreS-Gr 3–The Smurfs are getting ready for a big Halloween party and everyone is excited, except Scaredy Smurf. After spilling a rainbow potion, Scaredy gets stuck inside a monster costume, and chaos ensues. What Scaredy doesn’t know is that the costume changes his voice to sound like a monster, and he frightens all of his friends. The Smurfs are so afraid that they run into mean Gargamel, who helps confirm that the monster may not be as bad as everyone thinks. This Halloween title includes digital illustrations of the Smurf characters; these illustrations are often formatted in a bubble-like frame. Bold text on an orange background makes it easier for younger audiences to read. Each page features approximately two to four sentences, so it is a quick read-aloud. While younger readers will enjoy seeing favorite characters—including Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and Brainy—in the book, the storyline lacks a smooth flow from beginning to end.
VERDICT A good choice for fans of the Smurfs but skippable for already robust Halloween collections.
