PreS–Readers travel through North Pole Village in three different stories with Mr. Klaus and his friends Mouse and Polar Bear. First stop is Mr. Klaus’s house, where he has breakfast with his friends and then goes to work in the toy shop. He ends his day with a bubble bath before bed. The second adventure is at Polar Bear’s Nook. Here, Polar Bear, wearing a red scarf and other accessories, relaxes by eating an ice pop, fishing, reading, and sleeping. Finally, at Toymakers’ Workshop, a group of mice work to create beautiful wooden toys. Illustrations are unique and appear handcrafted. The stories are light and entertaining and provide new material on a perennial favorite character. For example, Mr. Klaus has an omelet and peas, pancakes, and grilled cheese for breakfast. Text is lively: a passage near the end of the first story reads, “He inspects every toy, making sure it’s just right, Then it’s time to go home and relax for the night. Mr. Klaus loves his bath, filled with bubbles and toys—Toys that splash and go
toot and make plenty of noise!”
VERDICT Recommended for holiday collections in need of fresh new materials each year.
