Gr 1-4–Told in rhyme with simple one to two sentences per page, this book is sure to delight with the yellow undertones that brighten the gouache and pastel illustrations. A Latina woman is breathing in nature as it surrounds her and breathing out gratefulness. As she is reclining beneath a large lofty tree, a squeaky squirrel and buzzing bee are frequent visitors to the yard. Her dog Fred, buried near the towering tree, is another important part of her joyful day. “In my yard is a squarish stone reminding me, I’m not alone.” She carries a journal that she draws and writes in to aid in the reflection of the beauty around her. Later, the woman is shown seated on a swing that is attached to a large branch of the great tree. The story ends with sunshine tickling her as it peeks between the boughs and dances in between the leaves. Beautifully written rhymes blend perfectly; the pacing is ideal for reading aloud.
VERDICT A strong addition to the shelves and an accessible title to add to nature lessons or even story hours about mindfulness, with its emphasis on simplicity and an appreciation of nature.
