PreS-Gr 2—One day Lizbeth Lou gets a rock in her shoe. It hurts, so she gets it out and throws it away. This leads to the rock landing in a cricket's canoe. He pushes it out so he doesn't sink, and a trout tries to eat it. The rock gets passed from trout to duck to ant to a sidewalk groove to a lady's hatpin to a pocket (with a hole) in a gentleman's coat, until it manages to make its way back once more to Lizbeth Lou's shoe. The circular plot of the story is a fun one, and the rhyming text shows the pebble's progress and illustrates the theme of "what goes around comes around." In the end, the girl throws the rock away again just as she did before. The illustrations are lovely cut-paper silhouettes that have been lit from behind and photographed. The muted sepia tones are beautiful. Children will enjoy reading the story as well as looking at the incredibly detailed illustrations.
VERDICT A slight but clever addition to most library collections, probably best shared one-on-one so viewers can pore over the intricate art.
