PreS-Gr 2–Saturdays are Luis’s favorite day because he gets to see his Super Abuela once again. As they play with their super capes, they defeat cupcake thieves, give super hugs, and prevent intrusive little sisters from playing big kid games. Six days pass, and Super Luis can’t wait to play with his Super Abuela again. Superhero day arrives, but Luis is disappointed when he hears that his Abuela is sick in the hospital. He knows that one of his superhugs is just the thing she needs to get better. He even lets little Isabel give her a hug, too. Abuela goes home, but she is still not strong enough to play yet. The boy tries everything—superhugs, superkisses, supershakes—but his super partner still can’t play. Soon, his “supervision” gets blurry with tears. Superheroes can cry, too. Luis and his sisters become super partners, and they both take care of their Super Abuela. This intergenerational picture book presents the very real experience of having an elderly grandparent who is ill with compassion and care. The narrative is child-friendly, and the sense of community and family is an anchor throughout. The colorful and vibrant illustrations of cheerful, playful family scenes will inspire kids (and their adults) to indulge in the joys of makebelieve.
VERDICT A fun and bright addition to Spanish picture book collections that will remind readers the importance of play and using their imagination even during difficult times. Purchase for intergenerational picture book shelves.
