It Rhymes With Takei

Gr 10 Up–Takei originally gained fame through his iconic role in the original Star Trek television series but has since expanded his worldwide audience through his civil and LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy and his social media presence. In this graphic novel, Takei shares the painful journey of hiding his sexuality growing up and later being worried that the truth would hurt his acting career. He came out late in life as a gay man and has since embraced his role-model status. In addition, a larger picture of what was happening in this era, including the tragic AIDS epidemic, is honestly depicted to further strengthen the long memoir. Takei again pairs with illustrator Becker and co-authors Steven Scott and Justin Eisinger, who were part of the creative team from They Called Us Enemy. Together, they have crafted an inspiring story, with evocative art and colors that capture Takei’s life, including the love story between him and his husband, Brad Altman.
