PreS-Gr 2–“Chi Miigwech” is one way to offer a big “thanks,” and there is certainly plenty to be thankful for in this world. A simple flowing narrative reminds readers to be thankful for each and every thing, from the sun, to the land, to the furriest of friends. Each thing is as important as the next. The title is an Anishinaabemowin word, and it offers an important opportunity to talk about Indigenous cultures and languages. This book, aided by its colorful illustrations, could also work well for very young children. The artwork throughout is strong in bold graphics, rooted in Indigenous culture. Stranger allows Indigenous inspiration to shine through in images that draw readers in. The text is very spare.
VERDICT A crisp light text accompanied by compelling graphics, this book will entertain small children and prompt older readers learning about Indigenous culture and language to explore further.
