Illustrated by Sophie Standing—a conceptual artist with a mission to improve health care communication through images—this collection of nuanced information can be used as both a reference book and as the launching pad for further exploration of the subject as a whole, or for one of its many particular points. Standing’s art relies on a gently hued palette and suggests diversity of race, body type, physical movements, and age without revealing facial expressions. Many, but not all, of the asserted facts receive in-text notes that are sourced at the back of book.
VERDICT Public, high school, and medical libraries serving patients all need this introduction. It would also support group reading and discussion.
