PreS-Gr 2–Ever since Gabe learned how to talk, he has been saying words, singing songs, asking questions, and talking to everyone around him. When Gabe talks so much that some people begin to wish he didn’t, Gabe suddenly loses his voice. He doesn’t speak a word: not to his family, his friends, his teacher, the doctor, not to anyone. His friends and family miss the sound of his voice, and their wish to hear him again brings Gabe’s voice back. Bright and colorful illustrations depict the child’s loving home life and fun time at school with friends, as well as the happiness he offers to others with his liveliness and imagination. Large, bold text mixed in with regular type helps to convey feelings and expressions, along with the illustrations. A grand story, demonstrating the downside of getting what one wishes for.
VERDICT A lovely picture book about appreciating those around us, even if they need a gentle “shush” now and then.
