K-Gr 2–This Step into Reading book featuring Barbie and her friends reminds beginning readers that everyone is unique. Each page features a different group of Barbie characters of various heights, skin tones, abilities, hair types, and other characteristics. With few words per page, the simple text is accessible to emerging readers. Photographs of actual dolls illustrate each page, showing diverse groups to make the point that Barbie has friends of different races. There is definite diversity among the dolls pictured yet they do all have the faces of models and the bodies of fitness experts. Even some of the youngest readers may find that none of these characters resemble real people. Still, there is a clear message of acceptance. This book will draw the attention of young readers who are already fans of Barbie or similar toys and encourage them to practice their reading skills.
