Gr 10 Up–Seven teenagers are lured to an abandoned motel in the middle of the desert with the promise of a luxurious three-day retreat, supposedly won through a school raffle. Upon arrival, they discover their cell service has been cut off, and they are left with a note outlining a deadly game they must play. Each teen is accused of having played a role in a fire that destroyed their school and killed several classmates. Every hour, one student must be sacrificed until only a single survivor remains. If no choice is made, all seven will die. This fast-paced thriller forces its characters into a grueling journey of self-reflection as they confront guilt, responsibility, and the instinct to survive. The author excels at creating relatable, deeply flawed characters—some readers will root for, others they may resent—whose loyalties and relationships are continually tested under extreme pressure. Themes of survivor’s guilt and moral responsibility are explored as the stakes escalate toward an explosive conclusion. The novel includes depictions of underage drinking and substance use, as well as several character deaths, though graphic gore is kept to a minimum. The cast is notably diverse, featuring bi and gay characters, and includes physical descriptions that reference varied skin tones.
VERDICT Highly recommended for high school libraries, especially where gritty, fast-paced thrillers are popular. Hand this to fans of Holly Jackson and Stephen King.
