PreS-Gr 2–A little boy’s invitation to play turns into a coding activity in this math-forward story. Beto’s sister Cora loves to play pirates, yet he wants to have a tea party. To get her out of her room, he draws a map to a treasure, which turns into a trial-and-error project for him. This bilingual story has side-by-side text in English and Spanish, yet the original English version already had some phrases and words in Spanish, and at times it’s repetitive. Instead of consolidating the single word exclamations, like
“Vamos!” there are now two of the same word, and some of the pages look crowded and busy with all the text. A glossary of Spanish words and a list of related activities can be found in the back.
VERDICT A good purchase for libraries serving Spanish-speaking communities and where STEM books are needed or in high demand.
