K-Gr 2–Octopus is frustrated with his surroundings—“The beach is jammed” and “The fish are too big”—so he decides to move. His sea friends eagerly offer their help, and together, they assist him in setting up a new home. The vibrant, eye-catching illustrations give depth to the underwater world with rich colors and dynamic movement, but the story itself lacks clarity. While the minimal text makes it accessible for young readers, the narrative leaves too many questions unanswered. Octopus’s motivation for moving isn’t clearly established, and it’s unclear what exactly he needs help with beyond gathering a few flowers. The absence of details about his old home makes the transition feel abrupt. The theme of friendship and helping others is a positive aspect, but the execution falls flat.
VERDICT For stories about helping friends, Joe Cepeda’s I Help or Suzy Capozzi’s I Am Helpful: A Positive Power Story offer stronger narratives. However, the unique illustrations in this title make it a worthwhile secondary purchase.
