PreS-Gr 1–This primer to the animated Marvel television show
Spidey and His Amazing Friends introduces the core team members (Spidey, Spin, and Ghost-Spider), a few other characters that help the team out, and some villains. It ends on a positive note about how the team works together and never gives up. While this book is a great way to introduce the show, it doesn’t quite have a plot or tell any sort of story. Instead, it merely notes different elements of the show. The verbiage was thoughtfully chosen: words are easy enough that many emergent readers will be able to mostly read the book on their own. More difficult words, such as copter, can be sounded out. For any words that may be unfamiliar, a glossary is included. Words that appear in the glossary are highlighted at the bottom of the page that they’re featured on. Other back matter includes a five question quiz to further young readers’ learning. The art supports and bolsters the text, giving context clues to the language. For example, when Spidey is introduced, readers see him in his superhero suit. A separate inset image shows Peter with his mask off, but the superhero suit on. Text reads, “This is Spidey. Spidey’s real name is Peter.”
VERDICT While this book features little to no plot, it is a good emergent reader title. It’ll fly off the shelves with Spidey fans everywhere.
