Brown Sugar Baby begins by helping Big-Papa whip up some magic in the kitchen, which ends with treats for the whole family, including the dog! Lewis exhorts young ones: “You have so much so share./ Your heart full-filled,/ your kindness spilled/ and sprinkled everywhere,” creating a sweet atmosphere of homely joy. Illustrations by Southerland are simple and bright, designed to create a spirit of inclusivity and delight within one’s family.
VERDICT Best read aloud to fully relish the rhyming flow, this is a fun, thoughtful addition to libraries with larger collections looking to increase their diverse holdings.
