PreS-Gr 1–Emergent readers learn about saying yes to new opportunities from the song and television character Baby Shark. Baby and Daddy Shark don’t see eye to eye when it comes to trying new things, until Baby Shark suggests “Yup Day,” a day devoted to saying “yes” to new adventures. Chaos ensues as the entire community embraces saying yes at the expense of their responsibilities, and Baby Shark has to step in to bring everything back into balance. Bright, colorful artwork captures the distinct characters and will delight young readers, and the moral of finding balance between trying everything and nothing is appropriate for the target age group. However, the text is challenging in places for emergent readers. For instance, words like “astronaut,” “commander,” and “copilot” are not necessary to the story, and are beyond the scope of this audience. Additionally, the plot, modeled after an animated series, is confusing at times.
VERDICT A potential favorite for fans of Baby Shark, but not the best choice for encouraging reading skills.
