Fiete Cars & Sports: Way To Go! | Touch and Go

The playful, skill-building "Fiete" apps from Ahoiii Entertainment are ever popular with children. The latest just picked up an award at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Ahoiii Entertainment's playful apps are popular with kids and include such standouts as Fiete Math, Farm, and Choice. With the announcement that Fiete Cars, Fiete Sports , and Fiete Hide and Seek were awarded in the "Best Game for Kids 6–10 Years" category at the Frankfurt Book Fair media prize ceremony this week, the developer is offering Cars at a reduced price until October 20th. Our reviews of Cars and Sports are below.

Fiete Cars (Ahoiii Entertainment, iOS, $.99, Free, IAP $.99; Android, Free, IAP $.99; PreK-Gr 2) is a challenging game that offers children the opportunity to build roads and set the course for the driver of a vehicle, and, possibly, create a story while they do so. A limited number of courses and challenges are provided with the free download, but more can be added as an in-app purchase.

Using their imaginations, older players will quickly learn how to drag and drop sections of roadways and bridges to create complicated routes and obstacles. A variety of vehicles (18-wheeler, excavator, police car, motorcycle, etc.) are available, as well as several background scenes for gamers as they travel about and learn to maneuver forward and reverse. Stunts and "special effects" (speed ramps, ski jumps, fart pads, etc.) can also be incorporated into the routes, adding to the fun. (The zoom effect will aid in roadway design.) Younger players will have no problem moving their vehicles, but will need guidance in exploring all aspects of the game. All users will be exercising their hand-eye coordination. A preview of the app is found on the developer's website.

Fiete Sports (Ahoiii Entertainment, iOS, Free, $1.99 IAP; Android, Free, IAP, $1.99; K-Gr 3) offers  players the opportunity to compete in Olympic-type sporting events. With visual instructions (a hand tap on the screen), players are off and running as they help Fiete participate in events such as hurdles, boating, swimming, and cycling. Each activity presents a particular challenge and a chance to exercise fine-motor skills; for example, while paddling down the river players must try to maneuver Fiete's kayak under a number of goal-like posts as the boat slowly increases its speed. On the track, each tap to Fiete speeds up the character as he attempts to outrun two competitors. The goal is to come in first with the quickest time but young players will delight in the animated figures with or without a win. At each finish line, competitors are celebrated with confetti and cheers. Viewers have access to a limited number of activities with the free download; an in-app purchase entitles them to eight additional sports. VERDICT With colorful picture book graphics and familiar characters from other "Fiete" apps, players will return over and over to watch the characters move, jump, tumble, and roll. Both Cars and Sports offer many hours of entertainment.—Denise Moore
