Gr 1-4–Sumaya is an eight-year-old girl who recently moved to the United States from Somalia. In this series, Ahmed, who was born in East Africa to Somali parents and later moved to Minnesota, introduces young readers to science through Sumaya’s curiosity about the world around her. In the newest titles, she explores topics like woodpeckers, how flowers grow, the states of matter when the ice melts, and how polar animals stay warm. These concepts are explained in a way that feels natural and engaging rather than like a textbook, making science accessible for young readers. The large, simple text and short three-chapter structure keep the books approachable, while colorful, full-page illustrations enhance the storytelling. Each title concludes with fun facts, a glossary, and discussion questions. VERDICT A wonderful, diverse series that makes science relatable and lively. An excellent addition to any collection.

In this set of stories, the siblings beg their parents to have a “yes day,” learn about an autistic classmate, help newly immigrated family members settle into America, attend an interfaith festival and a Pakistani wedding, and plan a special show-and-tell for school. Nadia and Nadir cheerfully explore the regular ups and downs of a kid’s life while incorporating details of their Muslim religion and culture, including Arabic words and phrases. A glossary is appended in each volume. VERDICT Recommended for all collections in need of more diverse beginning chapter books.
Atinuke. Love from Anna Hibiscus!illus. by Lauren Tobia. 96p. (Anna Hibiscus: Bk. 7). Candlewick. Jan. 2025. Tr. $16.99. ISBN 9781536239515.
Gr 2-4–Anna Hibiscus lives in Lagos, Nigeria, with her large, loving family. Each chapter follows a new experience for Anna while on a holiday to her grandparents’ hometown with her older girl cousins. The older cousins teach the younger children letters and numbers, and Anna learns about the hunger many village children face. When she catches a boy stealing her banana, she discovers he is an orphan with no one to care for him. Instead of punishing him, she brings him food and befriends him. When he falls seriously ill, Anna calls on her family, who help pay for his medicine. Once he recovers, he agrees to move to the city with them. Together, Anna, her grandfather, and her older boy cousins work to build a school in the village, ensuring the children can continue learning after she leaves. Small grayscale illustrations throughout bring the setting to life, from the bustling market to Sunny’s tiny home. These heartfelt and inspirational stories tackle difficult but important topics, showing young readers that even small actions can make a big difference. VERDICT A must-have for every collection, written by a Nigerian author, this series is both powerful and uplifting.
Axelrod-Contrada, Joan & Ann Malaspina. Zeke the Weather Geek: There’s Mud in My Flood!illus. by Paula Becker. 216p. Kids Can. May 2025. Tr. $15.99. ISBN 9781525304446.
Gr 2-4–Zeke is a fourth grader with a passion for weather—he dreams of becoming a meteorologist and keeps a thermometer, wind tracker, and weather journal to record daily patterns. As spring approaches, he notices cracks in the ice and worries that rapid melting could cause a flood. Alongside his younger brother Bub and his best friend Kiho, whose family is from Uganda, Zeke tracks the changes and learns more about the science behind the spring thaw. The book weaves in plenty of weather facts, including a well-illustrated diagram of the water cycle. A highlight of the story is when Freeze Jones, the local meteorologist, asks Zeke to be a Weather Watcher, introducing him to new friends who share his love of science. Though the narrative can be a bit cheesy at times and the science pages occasionally feel like an interruption, the book is well-paced, engaging, and full of relatable, diverse characters. The grayscale illustrations do a great job of capturing movement and clarifying scientific concepts. The back matter includes a helpful glossary of weather-related terms with definitions, as well as a Selected Sources page for kids who want to learn more about meteorology. VERDICT A cute secondary purchase, especially for libraries where weather-related books are in demand.
Bardhan-Quallen, Sudipta. 5-Minute Mermicorno: Starfall Stories. 176p. (Mermicorno: Starfall). Abrams. Oct. 2025. Tr. $12.99. ISBN 9781419783067.
Gr 2-4–Astra is a Mermicorno, a unicorn mermaid, who falls from the sky with no memory of who she is or where she came from. She is welcomed by Royal Mother Pearl, queen of Pearl Kingdom, who introduces Astra to her new underwater world. As Astra embarks on adventures with Pearl Girl, whom she has sworn to protect, she meets other Mermicornos and uncovers the wonders of her new home. Each chapter presents an adventure adapted from the television series, accompanied by still images from the show. Because TV storytelling relies heavily on visuals, the text often feels choppy, as it’s forced to describe actions that would be more naturally conveyed through animation. This results in a somewhat stilted reading experience. VERDICT Fans of the show will enjoy revisiting Astra’s adventures in book form, but for general chapter book collections, this is a secondary purchase.
Bass, Guy. The Monster Hunter. illus. by Pete Williamson. 224p. (Stitch Head: Bk. 6). Tiger Tales. Feb. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340893.
Gr 2-5–This singular, whimsically goth series is back with its sixth and final installment. Stitch Head, a creation of Mad Professor Erasmus, must protect the creature in the castle from being taken by Dottie Dauntless, a renowned Monster Hunter. Teaming up with Arabella and the other monster creations from the castle, Stitch Head has his work cut out for him. Gothic black-and-white illustrations bring this fun, wacky story to life, and the use of frequent and hilarious dramatic language makes it a fun read aloud. Hand to fans of Jim Benton’s “Franny K. Stein” and Harriet Muncaster’s “Isadora Moon” who are ready for something longer and more challenging. VERDICT Purchase where the previous books in this series are popular.
Bean, Brett. Treehouse Trouble. illus. by Brett Bean. 80p. (Muk ’n’ Honey: Bk. 1). Penguin Workshop. Feb. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9780593658970.
K-Gr 2–In this brand-new series, young readers will meet Honey Bunny and Muk Muk Moose, inventors who create a variety of wacky contraptions to help the forest. After the stairwell to their treehouse collapses, Honey and Muk Muk ponder their many inventions and wrack their brains for a way to get back into their treehouse and their “Triple Decker Hunger Wrecker” creation. Lively, full-color illustrations and short, simple chapters will keep young readers engaged, while the silly storylines and inventive gadgets will make them eager for the next installments. VERDICT Purchase where full-color beginning chapter books are in demand.
Beaty, Andrea. Lila Greer and the Shrieking Shadow. illus. by David Roberts. 160p. (The Questioneers: Bk. 7). Abrams/Amulet. Jan. 2025. Tr. $13.99. ISBN 9781419775727.
Gr 1-4–In this latest installment of the beloved “Questioneers” series, Beatty continues her masterclass in illustrated chapter books for beginning readers. School teacher Lila Greer, who battles anxiety, suffers a sleepless night when a strange shrieking sound keeps her awake. Not long after, a series of paintings go missing from her student Iggy Peck’s family gallery. Determined to solve both the mystery of the shrieking and the paintings, Lila Greer gets to work investigating and researching all around town, with a little help from the Questioneers. Like other stories in this series, this installment stands out for its thoughtful, well-rounded approach to problems. Lila Greer’s anxiety-battling tactics, sprinkled throughout the text, add a welcome SEL-angle. VERDICT Recommended for purchase where the other titles are popular.

ea vol: 64p. (Mystery Masters (Phonics Fun Chapter Books)). Lerner. Jan. 2025. Tr. $31.99.
Gr 1-3–A group of fifth graders analyze clues and work together to solve mysteries in this chapter book series designed for third to fifth grade readers in need of support. Each text focuses on a particular phonics skill such as long vowels and multisyllabic words. The mysteries include: two friends encounter a peculiar selection of scrolls around the school; a crime spree rocks one fifth grade class when objects go missing and a classmate is blamed; a robotics competition culminates in a stolen robot; an aspiring detective fixates on a quirky neighbor; and more. These engaging, fun-to-read stories involve readers at the end of each short chapter by asking a question. Generic-feeling illustrations do little to improve the story but work well to break up the text. VERDICT Purchase where easier chapter books for older struggling readers are needed.
Breen, Steve. Dinomite!64p. (Sky & Ty: Bk. 2). Pixel+Ink. Apr. 2025. Tr. $14.99. ISBN 9781645952176.
K-Gr 2–This second installment of a sweet and silly graphic novel series features a cowgirl named Sky and her Tyrannosaurus rex partner, Ty, who run a delivery service. In the two stories featured in this volume, the two encounter characters along their delivery route such as “Crusty Gus,” prospecting for gold, and a chicken trying to cross the road. Young readers will love the comic-style, full-page illustrations and the silly sense of humor, including a few pages of jokes at the end of the story and some brief facts about cowgirls. VERDICT Recommended for purchase where silly series like “Dog Man” and “Narwhal and Jelly” are popular.

ea vol: illus. by Emily Mendoza. 96p. (Fintastical Tales of Mari A. Fisch). HarperCollins. May 2025. pap. $6.99.
Gr 1-5–Your parents ask you to leave home without them to save your society, but there’s a catch. You’re a mermaid and you have to morph into human form to go above the water’s surface. It’s vitally important to discover why the humans are creating so much plastic trash that is destroying your home. Along with your trusty blobfish who morphs into a bulldog, you embark on the journey. There’s plenty of gym class drama, cafeteria mishaps, and upchucking episodes to keep young readers entertained while they dive into more serious issues like caring for the environment. Each volume ends with letters between Mari and her dad clarifying and reinforcing the lessons she learns. In Mermaid Mission, Mari ponders the idea of popularity. In Dare to Care, she discovers the risks involved in accepting a dare. In Pet Peeves, she comes to understand the important difference between pets and wildlife. Whimsical illustrations bring the fantasy characters to life and the vocabulary is very manageable. Short chapters and the inclusion of a shell-themed progress tracker keep readers motivated. VERDICT A winner for young readers who might wish for a little gentle guidance in navigating the tougher issues in growing up. If budgets are a concern, save this one for another purchasing cycle.

ea vol: illus. by Gary Boller. 24p. (Folktales on Empathy - Level 4). Crabtree. Jan. 2025. Tr. $31.33.
Gr 2-4–This series offers new perspectives on classic tales, emphasizing that every story has two sides. Designed to help children develop empathy and consider others’ feelings, the concept is engaging, and the lessons are valuable. However, the target audience may be a bit young to fully grasp the original folktales, which could lessen the impact of the retellings. Each story concludes with discussion questions and a writing activity, both of which could be effective when guided by an adult. While the pacing can feel slow, the messaging is clear and well-suited for classroom use. VERDICT A strong addition for classrooms and a worthwhile secondary purchase for libraries where books on social-emotional learning are in demand.
Burgos, Hilda Eunice. Bodega Cats: Just Kitten Around. illus. by Siara Faison. 160p. (Bodega Cats). Holt. Jan. 2025. Tr. $16.99. ISBN 9781250903761.
Gr 2-5–In this second installment of the charming “Bodega Cats” series, we meet Yesenia and her new kitten Candy. Yesenia is struggling with anxiety and the pressure to do well in school, a condition that causes her to pull out her hair. Her doctor suggests that taking care of a pet would be helpful, and Yesenia is overjoyed to get a kitten from her uncle’s bodega. Candy, who’s perspective we also get, is an energetic young kitten excited to be out and about in the world, so excited that she jumps out of Yesenia’s window and finds herself in New York City on her own. This thoughtful book does a great job of exploring anxiety and Yesenia’s specific experience balancing the very high expectations of her parents. The chapters from her cat’s point of view provide a cute balance that will have readers rooting for the two to be reunited. VERDICT This diverse, well-rounded series is recommended for all collections.
Cantini, Barbara. Ghoulia and the Sunken Secret. 64p. (Ghoulia: Bk. 5). Abrams/Amulet. Aug. 2025. Tr. $12.99. ISBN 9781419783845.
Gr 2-4–In this latest installment of the gently goth adventures of a zombie child and her family, Ghoulia and her friends uncover a beautifully decorated box in the attic that holds clues to her past. When she finds a postcard from her parents, Ghoulia sets out to investigate everything she can about their last voyage with the help of friends Sarah and Bruno and her cousin Gilbert. When they discover that her parent’s last voyage was aboard the Titanic, Ghoulia is convinced that they must have turned into Zombies like everyone in her family does, and that there could be a way to find them and bring them home. This sweetly funny and endearingly kooky series features memorable characters and quirky, detailed illustrations that will continue to win kids over. Fans of the previous books as well as new readers will enjoy this tale that can function as a standalone. Instructions for making your own Memory Box and a model boat in a bottle are appended. VERDICT Recommended for collections where the previous “Ghoulia” books, or anything Halloween-themed, is a hit.
Cargill, Perdita & Honor Cargill. Ghostly Getaway. illus. by Katie Saunders. 128p. (Diary of an Accidental Witch: Bk. 6). Tiger Tales. Feb. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340886.
Gr 2-4–Bea Black is on a school trip to Cadabra Castle, and she and her friends are expecting a magical time—they are witches, after all. Their first activity is a scavenger hunt, where they must learn to work together and get along. Later, they discover the castle is haunted by a ghost, and Bea is teamed up with Blaire, who she does not get along with. The story is structured like a diary, but the frequent, short entries—sometimes just minutes apart—make it feel choppy. A more cohesive approach with one or two entries per day summarizing events would have improved the flow. Additionally, many pages include footnotes that are quite small; integrating them into the main text with a different font or emphasis could have made them easier to follow. Black-and-white doodle-style illustrations appear on every page, adding personality and energy to the story. The magical adventure is engaging, and the characters feel relatable, making this a fun read despite its structural drawbacks. VERDICT A fine purchase for large libraries and where magical books are especially popular.
Chapman, Linda. Power Gem. illus. by Kim Barnes. 160p. (Star Friends: Bk. 12). Tiger Tales. Mar. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340909.
Gr 2-4–The Star Friends are back in this animal-filled, fantastical chapter book series about a group of magical animals who bond with human kids and teach them how to improve the world through magic. In this installment, the girls are trying to figure out who conjured the dark magic shades in their town’s annual scarecrow contest (the subject of the previous book) while also hanging with their new non–Star Friend classmate Maddie and trying to stop a development from taking over their mystical clearing in the woods. Expressive pencil drawings throughout the short chapters combine with uncomplicated world-building to make these stories a great entry to magical realism, mysteries, and fantasy series for young readers. VERDICT Purchase where magical mysteries circulate well.
Chin, Cherilyn. Penguin Gets Cleaned Up. ISBN 9798765619674.
––––. Sea Otter’s Second Chance. ISBN 9798765619650.
ea vol: illus. by Tracy Nishimura Bishop. 32p. (Lily Lu to the Rescue). Lerner. Jan. 2025. Tr. $30.65.
Gr 1-3–Lily Lu is a curious seven-year-old who travels the world with her mother, a marine biologist, learning about animals and their habitats along the way. In the newest installments, Lily and the friends she meets on her travels work together to clean penguins affected by an oil spill, and care for a baby sea otter until it can be placed with a surrogate mother. Each book is divided into four short chapters with soft, colorful illustrations that enhance the storytelling—especially when depicting animals and ecological concepts unfamiliar to young readers. The large font and simple sentence structure make these books approachable for early readers while maintaining a smooth and engaging narrative. The stories are both entertaining and educational, offering valuable lessons on wildlife conservation that may inspire children to learn more about protecting the environment. VERDICT A great addition to any early chapter book collection, especially where animal stories are popular.

ea vol: 64p. (Fairy Tale Journals). Capstone/Picture Window. Dec. 2024. Tr. $17.99.
Gr 1-3–Mason E. Pig, Indi, Goldie, and Little Red each tell their own stories in journal format in this new fractured fairy tale series. Classic tales are reimagined from the perspective of a character, offering a fresh twist on familiar narratives. The diary format adds to the appeal and will be popular with young readers. The first page of each chapter features a lined journal-style layout, though it would have been more effective if this design choice had been consistent throughout. Small doodles and expressive fonts enhance the theme. The stories are lighthearted and a bit cheesy, which may entertain young readers, and they stay simple without feeling too basic. Back matter includes a glossary, prompts for discussion and writing, and steps for kids to create their own journals. VERDICT A light and fun addition for larger collections looking to expand their selection of fractured fairy tales and diary-format books.

ea vol: 64p. (Camp Whispering Woods (Phonics Fun Chapter Books)). Lerner. Jan. 2025. Tr. $31.99.
Gr 3-6–The Camp Whispering Woods series delivers thrilling, spooky adventures perfect for young horror fans. Each book features a different child facing a mysterious challenge—whether solving the riddle of a ghost, uncovering the truth behind packages that come to life, or escaping a haunted cabin. With each eerie situation, the characters must use their wits to find a way out. The books can be read in any order, making them accessible to a wide range of readers. A unique aspect of the series is its subtle integration of the phonetic method, with each title focusing on a different concept such as closed syllables, common prefixes and suffixes, or compound words. However, these elements aren’t explicitly highlighted in the text and may go unnoticed without the book description. The stories feature short chapters, simple language, and a handful of illustrations, making them a great fit for older elementary students ready for a mix of chills and accessible reading. Each chapter ends with a thought-provoking question, encouraging comprehension and discussion. VERDICT These riddle-filled, phonics-based horror chapter books will be a hit in libraries where children’s spooky stories are in demand.
Cole, David. The Spelling Bee Showdown. illus. by Matty Mitchell. 108p. (Emily and Sam). Common Deer Pr. May 2025. pap. $9.99. ISBN 9781998484027.
Gr 1-3–Emily and Sam are back, and this time they’re diving into Aesop’s fables while preparing for their class spelling bee. Sam is a natural speller, while Emily enjoys reading and writing, so they make a bet—whoever loses the bee has to complete their class assignment of writing an original fable. Meanwhile, their classroom welcomes two new students, one of whom isn’t as kind as he first seemed. As the fables they study in class begin to reflect Sam’s real-life challenges, Emily stays focused on her competition. This early chapter book offers valuable lessons on perseverance, standing up to bullies, and healthy sibling rivalry. The illustrations, though sparse, are wonderfully expressive, resembling charming caricatures that add to the story’s appeal. VERDICT A must-have addition to any collection. This latest installment continues the series’ established practice of exploring sibling relationships, friendships, and the rewards of hard work.

ea vol: 24p. (Fantastic Animal Friends). Mitchell Lane. Jan. 2025. Tr. $32.86.
Gr 2-4–Each book in this series features a family and their beloved animal friend. The stories introduce a simple problem or obstacle for the character to overcome, such as being patient while an injury heals, or taking care of a creature so it can thrive. Butterflies, dogs, horses, and cows are just some of the animals featured in the series, along with a rotating cast of kid characters and the adults in their lives. Despite the statements at the start of each book, naming the valuable social emotional lessons that will be imparted through the story, these tales are unremarkable and forgettable. Unappealing artwork does little to help the story or spark the reader’s interest. VERDICT Bland stories and stereotypical characters make this series okay to skip.

ea vol: illus. by Mark Harmon. 32p. (The Martian Settlers). Mitchell Lane. Jan. 2025. Tr. $32.86.
Gr 2-4–In this six-book series, the McDowell-Johnson family is chosen to live on Mars and help make it habitable for future settlers. Siblings Lily and Linc undergo training before departing for the Red Planet with their parents. Along the way, they spend time on the spaceship, where they accidentally cause a zucchini overgrowth that takes over the ship. Once they arrive, they embark on various adventures as they adjust to life on Mars. Each spread features a full-page illustration opposite a page of text. While the concept is intriguing, the text can feel choppy, and the pacing is slow. The first two books lean heavily into science fiction with seemingly accurate details, but the third takes on a more fantastical tone, which feels like a departure from the initial premise. The series may appeal to kids curious about life on Mars, but the storytelling lacks surprises, and there was potential for a more engaging narrative. Despite being short books with four chapters, they feel longer due to the pacing. The cartoonlike illustrations add energy to the story, which helps balance the slower-moving text. VERDICT A secondary purchase for libraries where space books are in demand.

ea vol: 32p. (Life Lessons Through Sports). Mitchell Lane. Jan. 2025. Tr. $32.86.
Gr 2-4–This Social Emotional Learning (SEL)–focused series produces books with very clear lessons that illustrate the importance of focusing on one’s emotions in order to get past mental roadblocks and frustration. Each of these four volumes follows a different athlete facing a problem, usually involving peer pressure, self-doubt, and anxiety. Gymnastics, baseball, soccer, volleyball, pickleball, and football are the sports covered in this particular set. While it’s true that SEL books are in constant demand, particularly in schools, this series lacks heart and originality, with each bland story blending into the next. VERDICT Recommended for purchase only where SEL titles are specifically needed.

Gr 1-4–This series is written in a diary format and features an adorable handwriting-style font and illustrations that look like they were drawn by an artistic child—adding to the book’s charm and authenticity. While My New Best Friend provides helpful context, the books can be read in any order. Olivia is a sweet, thoughtful friend bursting with creative ideas, and her adventures are both relatable and entertaining. The well-paced stories, engaging format, and plentiful illustrations make this series a fantastic choice for readers transitioning to chapter books. VERDICT A wonderful and worthwhile addition to all collections.

Luis, the new team captain, with the help of teammate Aliyah, hatches a plan to connect with Ty and Savannah in an effort to improve their uncooperative behavior. While the baseball details will appeal to sports-loving kids, the book could have benefitted from more illustrations to break up the text-heavy, occasionally clunky story. VERDICT Recommended for collections where sports books are constantly in demand.

It’s the worst day ever for Ly-Lan, until a colorful cast of supportive adults, parents, and friends help her to see the good in a tough situation. Simple yet engaging sentence structure, short chapters, and a wholesome message about embracing change and making new friends are perfect for early readers, who may also learn a few words in Vietnamese along the way. Young readers will enjoy the fun premise, clever problem-solving, and humorous moments throughout. VERDICT A fun and silly adventure sure to delight young readers—a great addition to any collection.

Facts on the real-life critters in the book are appended, along with “Dive Deeper” questions. With the help of her best friend Kushi, she comes up with a plan to earn as many tickets as possible. But as the week goes on, Ava realizes that kindness isn’t about rewards—it’s about being kind just because. Ava’s quirky habits, like keeping bits of food in her pockets and “meeping” like an alien instead of saying yes, make her an especially endearing and believable six-year-old. VERDICT A sweet and engaging story about friendship and kindness, perfect for any collection.

ea vol: 64p. (Tails and Tales (Phonics Fun Chapter Books)). Lerner. Jan. 2025. Tr. $31.99.
Gr 2-4–This series features different animal protagonists, including an iguana, a cat, a dog, and more. While there are a few grayscale illustrations scattered throughout, the books lean heavily on text for phonics-based chapter books. Unlike other similar series, the phonics concepts being taught aren’t immediately obvious, making them less effective for direct phonics instruction. Including a brief explanation of the phonics focus along with practice words as an introduction to each story would have strengthened their educational impact. That said, as first-person, anthropomorphic animal stories, these books are lighthearted and entertaining, especially for young readers who enjoy animal adventures. Each chapter ends with a comprehension question, adding value for educators and caregivers looking to reinforce reading skills. VERDICT A secondary addition for library collections where phonics-based chapter books and animal stories are in demand.

K-Gr 2–Beloved character Yasmin is back with this series focusing on celebrations and holidays including 100 days of School, the Muslim holiday Eid-al-Adha, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and Juneteenth. Back matter includes further facts and information, an occasional craft tutorial or recipe, and a “Chat with Yasmine,” in which she asks the reader to think about their own experience with the holiday or celebration featured. Like the previous volumes in this series, the bright, welcoming illustrations and level-appropriate prose and information make these texts ideal for classrooms and public libraries, particularly those looking for a more diverse representation of holidays. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in all collections.
Faruqi, Saadia. Marya Khan and the Disastrous Class Project. illus. by Ani Bushry. 144p. (Marya Khan: Bk. 5). Abrams/Amulet. Apr. 2025. Tr. $14.99. ISBN 9781419774959.
Gr 2-4–Marya Khan is partnered with a new boy named Waleed for a class project. Waleed, who is from Pakistan—the same country as Marya’s family—is very quiet and shy. When Marya starts working on their project about Pakistan, Waleed initially refuses to discuss his homeland. Determined to bridge the gap, Marya makes it her mission to befriend him. Each chapter opens with a “word of the day,” offering fun vocabulary practice, even though most events unfold within a single day. Grayscale illustrations break up the text and add visual interest, making the book especially approachable for readers transitioning to longer chapter books. VERDICT A wonderful addition to any collection, this story offers insights into Pakistani culture and the challenges—and rewards—of making new friends in a new place.
Fernandez, Caroline. Asha and Baz Meet Gladys West. illus. by Dharmali Patel. 108p. (Asha and Baz). Common Deer Pr. May 2025. pap. $9.99. ISBN 9781998484003.
K-Gr 3–Asha and Baz take on a school challenge using a compass rose to navigate a community garden and find hidden flags. If they follow the directions correctly, the letters they collect will spell out a word, leading them to victory. To help them succeed they travel back to 1978 where they meet mathematician Gladys West, a key figure in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Through their time with Gladys, Asha and Baz learn the importance of perseverance, following a compass, and embracing mistakes as part of learning. Baz’s fear of making mistakes feels a bit exaggerated, but it effectively reassures young readers that failure is part of the process. The grayscale illustrations scattered throughout the chapters help bring the characters to life, especially in moments depicting the discrimination Gladys faced as a woman of color in the Navy. VERDICT While this installment may not be as strong as previous books in the series, it remains a valuable addition to any collection, particularly in libraries where STEM-focused books are in demand.
Flanagan, Liz. City of Secrets. illus. by Joe Todd-Stanton. 176p. (Wildsmith: Bk. 2) Union Square Kids. Jun. 2025. pap. $8.99. ISBN 9781454957560.
Gr 2-4–A sweet little fantasy about caring for the people and animals in one’s life. In the first book of the series, Rowan discovered her wildsmith powers—her ability to soothe and talk to animals—and encountered a baby dragon. In this second installment, Rowan’s father brings home a new magical creature, a baby pegasus. Rowan must hide the creature’s presence from Estrian poachers and ends up on a dangerous journey to keep the pegasus and her father safe. Flanagan uses simple language in this story but her characters are written with nuanced emotions. Rowan’s war-torn family finds ways to protect their neighbors and the animals in their care despite being hunted for their wildsmith gifts. VERDICT For young readers who enjoy stories about magical creatures.

Gr 1-3–Super Rabbit Boy is back for another adventure in this brightly illustrated graphic novel hybrid series that takes place inside a video game. King Viking asks Super Rabbit Boy to help him defeat the thief who stole his giant Gigabot and is now threatening Animal Town. Hijinks ensue as the two sworn enemies navigate a temporary truce and work together to defeat the thief in a series of increasingly complicated games and obstacles. The jokes, the action, and the art all work together to keep this appealing series enticing for video-game-loving readers. VERDICT Purchase where other volumes in the series are popular.
Galbraith, Bree. Wednesday Wilson Looks on the Fright Side. illus. by Morgan Goble. 144p. (Wednesday Wilson: Bk. 4). Kids Can. Oct. 2025. Tr. $15.99. ISBN 9781525311574.
Gr 1-3–This latest adventure finds Wednesday in search of the perfect business idea that will double as a solution to a problem at school. Just before Halloween, the budding entrepreneur is dismayed to learn that her family’s house is on the “No-Knock List” due to their history of giving out non-candy treats on Halloween night. Wednesday is determined to come up with a plan to get her family off the list. But when her plan (homemade slime) turns out to be more expensive than her strict budget will allow, she must also come up with creative ways to make it work. This chapter book series explores the ups and downs of friendships and “mean girls” in school and models healthy but realistic ways to handle them. Wednesday has a mind for business and often uses terminology that she helpfully defines for young readers in footnotes. Illustrations on almost every page make these longer chapter books approachable for young readers who will love Wednesday’s creative problem-solving approach to life. VERDICT Recommended for all collections in search of fun early chapter books.

ea vol: 24p. (Multicultural Folktales). The Child’s World. Jan. 2025. Tr. $32.79.
Gr 1-4–A collection of folktales from around the world in one spot. A spectacular tool for any educator to use to teach about fables, legends, and folklore. Some of the stories may be familiar to students, but offering them in conjunction with tales from other cultures brings the vibrancy of the tradition to life. Each story is followed by activity suggestions and excellent higher-level thinking questions to prompt in-depth discussions about character traits, right vs. wrong, responsibility, and other concepts. Beautiful maps highlight the countries associated with each tale. Perfect for ELA, social studies, and any class looking to compare cultural values and traditions. The richness of these lively legends will do what they have done for generations: entertain, spark imagination, and ask probing questions about wisdom and morality. Animal tricksters, wise brahmans, and worried parents all make an appearance throughout the various stories. Sumptuous illustrations provide a visual feast. VERDICT This series will add a fresh update to the folktales section and introduce readers to treasured classics along with lesser-known fables from around the world. An absolute must-have for your library.
Gephart, Donna & Lori Haskins Houran. The Woofmore on Thin Ice. illus. by Josh Cleland. 80p. (The Woofmore: Bk. 3). Abrams/Amulet. Feb. 2025. Tr $14.99. ISBN 9781419767661.
K-Gr 2–In the third book in this delightful series, Rufus is enjoying the coziness of winter at the hotel when he learns that Furya LaBone, the famous ice skater, is coming to stay and everything must be perfect. When the local ice rink unexpectedly closes, Rufus comes up with a plan to create a new skating rink for Furya: the hotel’s frozen outdoor pool. The charm of this series lies in its delightful, pun-infused wordplay and the humorous, expressive, and beautifully colored illustrations that bring the adventures at Woofmore Hotel to life. VERDICT Due to its wide appeal, this book and series are recommended for all collections.
Grabenstein, Chris & J.J. Grabenstein. The Three Smelly Goats Gruff. 96p. (Stinky’s Stories: Bk 3). HarperCollins/Mar. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9780063311244.
Gr 2-4–The children of Hickleberry Elementary have a secret: as soon as library story time is over and the librarian is otherwise engaged, the stuffed animals come to life. Stinky, a mischievous skunk who loves dad jokes and potty humor, is then free to expound upon the classic fairy tale of the day and give it a more satisfying (and often stinkier) ending. In this volume, Stinky follows the troll from “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” after he’s evicted from his bridge and must search out a new home. This proves challenging when his persistent anger management issues and general smelliness get in the way. Fueled by plenty of silly wordplay and fart jokes, this series would itself serve as an engaging library read-aloud, sure to prompt plenty of gasps and giggles. Simple line illustrations add imagination support for young readers and showcase the diversity and excitement of the young students (and their perceptive librarian). VERDICT A delightfully gross series for fans of “Captain Underpants” or “Dog Man.”

Gr 2-4–This adventure-packed series opener follows the narrator and the reader on a quest to find the reader’s lost lucky rabbit’s foot. Blending first- and second-person narration, the unique storytelling style is immersive. The book is heavily illustrated with engaging and funny images that resemble a graphic novel style, but without panels. Short paragraphs and speech bubbles keep the story moving, and humor-filled details are hidden throughout the artwork. Their journey leads to the Land of Lost Things, where the real hunt begins. VERDICT A clever and hilarious adventure sure to become a fan favorite.

ea vol: illus. by Emma McCann. (Bear Grylls Adventures). ABDO. Jan. 2025. Tr. $35.64.
Gr 2-4–This adventure series by well-known outdoorsman Bear Grylls focuses on a group of kids at camp who find themselves in unique outdoor situations with Grylls, who teaches them survival skills. Each text introduces readers to a character dealing with a challenging social situation in which they feel embarrassed, anxious, or left out: one character deals with a lack of direction, another hates water, and another is a very picky eater, to name a few examples. The characters are each given a compass (passed along by a character from another installment of the series) that magically transports them to Grylls’s location, where they learn valuable lessons about what they are capable of, thus improving their confidence back in the real world. While these tales, peppered through with illustrations, are undoubtedly formulaic, they will appeal to reluctant young readers looking for fun tidbits about life in the wild such as how to skin and gut a dead moose or make a shelter to survive a blizzard. VERDICT A great choice for collections in which adventure stories for reluctant readers are in demand.
Haydu, Corey Ann. Zoomi and Zoe and the Tricky Turnaround. illus. by Anne Appert. 96p. (Zoomi and Zoe: Bk. 1). Quirk. Jun. 2025. Tr. $15.99. ISBN 9781683694588.
Gr 2-4–Zoomi, a rhino-like stuffie from GlumbleGlibble, and Zoe, a girl from the Human world, cross paths in a magical yet confusing adventure. In the world of stuffies, the Tricky Turnaround happens when they are adopted—happy to find a human but sad to leave their friends. However, the story lacks needed backstory and explanation. Zoe is suddenly pulled into GlumbleGlibble without understanding what’s happening, making her experience feel more frightening than magical. Zoomi dragging her down a giant mudslide despite her protests highlights issues with communication rather than teaching about friendship. With too many new concepts introduced at once, the story feels overwhelming and unfocused. The real highlight of the book is the soft, colorful, and magical illustrations, which bring the world of GlumbleGlibble to life in a way the text struggles to. VERDICT A secondary purchase for large libraries where whimsical fantasy is popular.
Henkes, Kevin. Still Sal. illus. by Kevin Henkes. 256p. (Miller Family). Greenwillow. Oct. 2024. Tr $15.19. ISBN 9780063389625.

K-Gr 3–Baron Von Bubbles, better known as Bub the Pug, is back—this time with a solo in Bella’s Pet Choir. The book follows the familiar format of lined paper with text, large colorful illustrations, and expressive speech bubbles. A fun visual touch is the small emotion bubble near Bub, changing colors and expressions to match his feelings—red for anger, orange for surprise, green for happiness, and more. When Bub falls off the stage and breaks his leg, he’s stuck wearing a plastic cone, which ruins his outfit and makes him want to quit. But with some encouragement, he learns that what matters most isn’t how he looks—it’s being himself. The short, simple text and engaging format make this a great choice for readers transitioning to chapter books. The back matter includes comprehension questions and activity ideas for deeper engagement. VERDICT A lively and creative addition to this entertaining series, sure to delight Bub the Pug fans.

For a first chapter book, this series has a somewhat complicated storyline that some young readers might have trouble following. Still, frequent illustrations throughout the book help bring the story to life and the African setting sets it apart. Back matter expands on facts and terminology from African cultures. VERDICT Recommended for collections where the other books in the series circulate well.

ea vol: illus. by Graham Ross. 96p. (Max Todd). Formac. Jan. 2025. pap. $12.99.
Gr 2-4–Max is an ordinary kid—except when he gets the super fidgets. Whether he’s bouncing, fidgeting, or making up games in his head, Max has his own way of navigating the world. His best friend Shiv and his frenemy Mary Beth accept him as he is, and together they tackle everyday adventures, from flu shots to field trips to camping trips gone hilariously wrong. The playful, fast-paced storytelling captures Max’s energy well, with fonts that shift in size and style to exaggerate certain phrases. Colorful illustrations burst from every page, enhancing the humor and making this a visually engaging early chapter book. However, Max’s mother often tells him to “behave,” as if his natural need to move and make noise is a problem, rather than a part of who he is. No one asks him why he fidgets or what’s going on in his head—they just tell him to stop. This lack of understanding makes Max feel like what he’s experiencing is wrong, even though it isn’t. While many kids will relate to Max’s struggles, the way the adults respond to him could be disappointing to some readers. VERDICT A decent addition to collections, particularly where high-energy, humor-driven chapter books are in demand. However, the way Max is treated may leave some readers wishing for a more supportive and understanding environment.
Partridge, Billy. Hupo and the Wonder Thief. illus. by Billy Partridge. 64p. (Hupo). Flying Eye. Mar. 2025. Tr. $17.99. ISBN 9781838741624.
Gr 1-4–Hupo and the Aletha love wandering their city, chatting with shopkeepers, and sharing stories of their favorite book adventurer, the Great Humdingo—much to the irritation of those around them. But when a mysterious mist creeps into town and the Aletha is captured by a villain in the mountains, Hupo must embark on a daring quest to set things right. The introduction feels both rushed and overly long, with an overwhelming number of names, details, and descriptions that make it difficult to follow—especially with the small font. Once the main plot unfolds, the pacing improves, and the story eventually finds its rhythm. The message of embracing oneself and ignoring outside judgment is strong, and the conclusion beautifully ties together elements that initially felt extraneous. The book’s loose graphic novel format—featuring panels, speech bubbles, and descriptive text—is bursting with color and dynamic action. VERDICT A secondary purchase where graphic novels are in demand.

Fifth grader Gemma and seventh grader Torin have just moved from Miami to Orlando with their mom, who has taken a new job at Disney. When things start to go awry on some of the rides in the Magic Kingdom, Gemma realizes that a mysterious book she brought with her from Miami contains a magical map of Disney that seems to directly affect the corresponding areas at the parks. In the first book, Pirates of the Caribbean is thrown into disarray when the animatronic characters are moved around, while the second book focuses on the Jungle Cruise ride. Disney fanatics will love the chance to read these mysteries set in their favorite place. VERDICT Recommended for most collections where starter adventure series circulate well.
Platt, Christine. Frankie and Friends: The Lost Tooth. illus. by Alea Marley. 80p. (Frankie and Friends: Bk. 3). Candlewick/Walker. Mar. 2025. Tr. $15.99. ISBN 9781536222111.

How will the Tooth Fairy find her? Along with her trusty friend group of stuffed animals and toys, Frankie hatches a plan to keep the Tooth Fairy informed. Engaging illustrations, short chapters, and a problem-solving storyline make this a great choice for both read-alouds with younger kids and beginning readers. A glossary explains some of the terms used in the story. VERDICT Recommended for all first chapter collections.

Gr 2-4–Dev lives in Kathmandu and especially loves summers there. School is out, giant watermelons and mangoes are in season, and he can enjoy chilled lassis (sweet yogurt shakes) under the sun. Dev has a big imagination and sometimes gets into trouble, so when he spots a real yeti, no one believes him. As the yeti causes chaos in his house, his family assumes that Dev is to blame. Determined to prove he’s telling the truth, Dev traps the yeti, only to discover that it just wants to go home. Together, they hatch a plan to get the yeti on a plane and back where it belongs—at least until next time. This early graphic novel features colorful illustrations, large panels, descriptive text, and engaging speech bubbles. Several Nepali words are incorporated throughout the story, with helpful footnotes providing pronunciation and definitions for readers unfamiliar with the language. While the fast-paced plot packs in plenty of twists, it can feel a bit rushed at times. However, the creative premise and expressive artwork make for an entertaining read. VERDICT A fun, mischievous graphic novel that will appeal to young readers. A solid decent purchase for larger collections.
Punset, Ana. The Cupcake Contest. illus. by Diana Vicedo. 128p. (Unicornia). Candlewick. Jul. 2025. Tr. $17.99. ISBN 9781536241020.
Gr 1-4–Unicornia is a magical land of unicorns, and it’s Unicornia’s birthday! The soft pastel illustrations, featured on nearly every page, use only the dominant color from the book’s cover, creating a dreamy aesthetic. But when bouncing butter won’t stay in the bowl and foaming cream cheese frosting overflows the kitchen, she realizes she needs help. Sasha, a classmate with a knack for magical cookies, teams up with her to create the perfect recipe. The story is fun, well-paced, and full of inventive magical baking mishaps sure to get some giggles. While unicorn lovers may be disappointed by their minimal presence, the approachable sentence structure and engaging format make this ideal for early chapter book readers. VERDICT A fun, lighthearted read that will attract readers with “unicorn” in the title and keep them engaged with its magical theme and whimsical illustrations.

ea vol: illus. by Esther Hernando. 112p. (Maggie Sparks). Jolly Fish Pr. Jan. 2025. Tr. $28.50.
Gr 1-4–Maggie Sparks is a mischievous young witch with curly hair, a freckled face, and a knack for getting into trouble. In one book, her parents bring home a new baby, and Maggie is immediately annoyed and jealous of all the attention he receives. In another, her cousin lies and gets away with it, leaving Maggie frustrated that no one believes her—so she decides lying must be the way to go. Another installment follows Maggie and her best friend Arthur as they navigate the challenges of learning to swim. Each book contains five longer-than-average chapters, but with large font and frequent illustrations, the format remains approachable for young readers. The stories are well-paced, the characters are highly relatable, and each book concludes with a clear lesson. However, Maggie’s persistent negativity—calling things “stupid,” frequently complaining about her baby brother, and generally taking a pessimistic view—may not make her the best role model for all readers, even if her feelings are understandable. VERDICT A decent purchase for larger collections or libraries where magical mischief is in high demand.

Bo also prepares a red dish to share at a Juneteenth picnic, further celebrating Black culture. ea vol: illus. by M. Johnson. 72p. (Misfits Academy). Capstone/Stone Arch. Dec. 2024. Tr. $19.49.
Gr 2-4–This quirky, humorous series follows a group of students at the Melissa Fitz Academy of Arts and Sciences (otherwise known as the Misfits Academy), all of whom have superhero abilities that most would consider useless. Each chapter features a mix of traditional narrative-style text mixed with several panels of bright, engaging, graphic novel-style illustrations and text bubbles. The characters are funny (one character can conjure Chicken Noodle Soup at any time; another can control the weather but only above his own head) and the storylines are exciting and compelling enough to keep young readers eagerly turning the pages and awaiting the next volume. VERDICT Recommended for most collections, particularly those where graphic novel hybrids are popular.

Young readers will love the opportunity to dive into another aspect of the DC universe and will be delighted to see their favorite dog characters fight crime in each other’s stories. VERDICT Recommended for collections where superhero stories are popular.

Meanwhile, the mermaids investigate mysterious damage to the coral reef, uncovering a culprit—but the story ends on a cliffhanger, setting up the next book. For those unfamiliar, this first survival story follows ten-year-old George as he struggles to survive that fateful night onboard the ship. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in collections where it’s time to replace a worn copy of the original, or where the series continues to fly off the shelves.

Young fans of ghost stories won’t be able to resist these tales, which also serve as a safe introduction to the vast world of scary tales for kids. While they won’t traumatize anyone, they may inspire kids to seek out more. VERDICT Recommended for collections in which tales for reluctant readers are in demand.

ea vol: illus. by Yusup Mediyan. (Monster Problems). ABDO. Jan. 2025. Tr. $35.64.
Gr 2-5–A fast-paced series featuring a snarky half-vampire and his fellow paranormal classmates. Abraham Murray, or Bram, is an orphan with a penchant for running away from his foster homes. Bram, during his latest attempt to escape his most recent group home, gets picked up by a spider-man mutant named Crawler and is brought to the Van Helsing Academy, a school for supernatural kids. Bram always knew he had strange abilities but didn’t realize he was a half-vampire until he arrived at the academy. Bram also learns about the villainous Count Dracula and his plan to conquer the world. The series follows Bram as he learns more about his vampire abilities, tries to fit in with his new classmates, and saves the world from Count Dracula. This series would appeal to readers who enjoy tales about superheroes or mutants. VERDICT A great choice for readers who enjoy monster stories that are adventurous rather than scary.

ea vol: illus. by Michela Di Cecio. 40p. (Band Together). Capstone/Stone Arch. Dec. 2024. Tr. $17.99.
Gr 3-6–Lewis, Zeedee, Oscar, and Soren are members of a band who practice together constantly and must work through several challenges as a team. In one story, Lewis and Zeedee decide to expand their duo by adding new band members. In another, Lewis gets a synthesizer, and the band struggles to stay in sync. Other challenges include the band figuring out how to blend different musical styles when their performances start falling flat, and band members discovering hobbies outside of the band. Vibrant illustrations fill each page, sometimes replacing text entirely, while the writing remains simple with short sentences to engage early readers. However, the sentence structure can feel stilted at times, and some plots are overly basic while others introduce conflicts too late, leaving them unresolved. VERDICT If your collection needs music-focused chapter books, this series will fit the bill, but it’s not a must-have.
Webb, Holly. The Smallest Kitten. illus. by Sophy Williams. 128p. (Pet Rescue Adventures). Tiger Tales. Apr. 2025. pap. $5.99. ISBN 9781664340879.
Gr 1-4–Amina and Zara are twins, and they’re about to adopt their very own kitten. Amina is outgoing and talkative, often speaking for Zara, who is more reserved. Together, they choose the quietest, most timid kitten of the bunch—Pixie—later realizing that she is a lot like Zara. As the twins start a new school, Pixie is adjusting to being alone during the day. She’s easily spooked and still getting used to life outside the shelter. When Amina and Zara get into a fight at their birthday party, Pixie runs off and hides, and they have no idea where she is. To find her, the sisters must learn to communicate and work together. Chapters from Pixie’s point of view add a unique touch, shifting between the perspectives of fourth grade girls and a cat. Soft grayscale illustrations are sprinkled throughout. This entertaining and heartwarming story will especially resonate with young readers who have siblings. VERDICT A charming addition to early chapter book collections, particularly for libraries with a strong readership for animal stories.
West, Tracey. Night of the Dream Dragon: A Branches Book. illus. by Matt Loveridge. 96p. (Dragon Masters: Bk. 28). Scholastic. Apr. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781339022437.

A brief recap sets the stage before Drake teams up with Kishar and her dragon to stop an evil wizard threatening the Dream World. Action-packed and fast-paced, the story is supported by grayscale illustrations that enhance the adventure. With short chapters, simple vocabulary, and large illustrations breaking up the text, this remains an approachable and exciting choice for new chapter book readers who are interested in dipping their toes in fantasy. VERDICT A strong addition to the series and a must-buy where “Dragon Masters” is popular.
Yardi, Robin. Dive for the Black Pearl: A Branches Book. illus. by Paul Kellam. 96p. (Coral Keepers: Bk. 2). Scholastic. Jun. 2025. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781546122456.
Gr 2-4–Young mermaids train to become sworn protectors of their realm in this magical series. This installment picks up where the last book left off, and a full-page summary of the previous events helps orient young readers. Princess Finn and her friends, Moon and Link, set off on a quest to find the Black Pearl to prevent another attack from Rozaro, an evil shark magician determined to steal the queen’s throne. The book balances short sentences, brief chapters, and simple language while weaving a complex storyline, though at times, this results in a choppy narrative. Simplifying certain plot points could have improved clarity, but the concept remains engaging, and the grayscale illustrations are expressive and plentiful. VERDICT A purchase for large libraries and collections where Branches books are popular.
