The Elizabeth (CO) School District is deciding whether to cull books like the Bible or The Hunger Games from school libraries after a committee found they contain “sensitive topics.” In approving a list of around 138 books for public review, the Board of Education also unanimously adopted a protocol to notify parents when their child checks out such texts—books like Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl for sexual content, The Color Purple by Alice Walker for racism and violence, or 1984 by George Orwell for graphic violence. Parents can opt out of allowing their children to check out such books altogether.
