Just in time for road-trip season comes the new free monthly podcast series, Highlights Hangout

Launched this week, the series is a collaboration between the makers of the popular and iconic Highlights For Children magazine (now 72-years old!) and the creators of NPR’s also popular science podcast Wow in the World, both produced in partnership with Tinkercast.com, a leading producer of educational audio.

This magazine-format show presents many beloved Highlights features enhanced with an energetic new voice that reminds me a lot of old radio. The stories, puzzles, jokes, the fun and the learning are all there. Interactive features and weekly Hangmail allow young listeners to call in by submitting riddle responses and sharing their own jokes, riddles, tongue twisters, poems and potentially Wow-worthy burning science questions to be answered by Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz from Wow in the World.

Hosted by Tim Kubart and Juanita Andersen (Barrel of Monkeys the show features familiar Highlights features like Goofus and Gallant, Ask Arizona, and replaces the Hidden Pictures challenges with a more sonic Hidden Sound Game that invites listeners to listen for, identify, and count up the Hidden Sounds throughout the show.

In addition to the Hidden Sounds game, Hang Ten, the action-packed premiere episode, features a song about summer camp, listener-submitted jokes and poems, a visit to an imaginary amusement park and a game called I Can’t Believe this Imaginary Wave Pool Has a Line This Long Game Show and learning fun around the sport of surfing.

In the launch press release, Tinkercast CEO, Meredith Halpern-Ranzer, shared:
We know families are hungry for quality experiences that bring them together and offer alternatives to screen time.  After the success of our first podcast “Wow in the World” this year, it was essential for Tinkercast’s second show to appeal to curious kids and their grown-ups in the same way. We couldn’t have found a partner more dedicated to kids than Highlights and we are thrilled to help them deliver meaningful and playful content in a whole new way. We are also excited that “Wow in the World” hosts, Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas, will be become a part of the MySci page in Highlights Magazine through this new partnership

The 20ish-minute shows will be available at the Apple StoreGoogle Play and at the Highlights Hangout site.  Highlights offers a variety of other free apps for kids. Screen Shot 2018-06-10 at 4.54.55 PM
