We Need Diverse Books Announces 2025 Walter Dean Myers Awards Winners

Shark Teeth by Sherri Winston and Black Girl You Are Atlas by Renée Watson are this year's winners in the younger readers and teen categories, respectively.

We Need Diverse Books announced the winners of the 2025 Walter Dean Myers Awards for Outstanding Children's Literature.

The Walters, which are given in honor of author Walter Dean Myers and to celebrate diversity in children's books, are awarded in two categories: Teen (ages 13-18) and Younger Readers (ages 9-13).

The 2025 Walter Award for Younger Readers winner is Shark Teeth by Sherri Winston. One honor title was selected: The Creepening of Dogwood House by Eden Royce.

The Teen winner is Black Girl You Are Atlas by Renée Watson, illus. by Ekua Holmes. The Teen honor title is A Crane Among Wolves by June Hur.
