PreS-Gr 2–Woodland animal friends are gathered together near the lake when Ardilla makes a comment about wanting to fly. This leads to a discussion about SuperTortuga, an incredible super turtle who can fly and who performs amazing heroic feats. When Conejo exclaims that SuperTortuga doesn’t exist, Zorro tells his first lie: She does exist, and she is Zorro’s friend. This small lie soon snowballs as the friends ask Zorro for more information about SuperTortuga, to the point that he is expected to bring her to a party to meet the friends. When one of the lies puts Ardilla in danger, Zorro must finally tell the truth. The friends are shocked to learn that Ratona has a secret of her own. The woodland setting is both familiar and fantastical, with shades of coral, peach, and teal taking the place of the greens and grays usually found in such areas. Characters are also featured in lovely, out-of-the-ordinary colors, and the homes they live in are built into the large trees, adding to the magic of the setting. Whimsical illustrations and carefully paced expressive Spanish text bring to mind classic children’s books and, together with the timeless lesson shared, are sure to make this title a favorite.
VERDICT A beautiful selection and an excellent message about how small lies can quickly spiral out of control.
