You Are a Reader!/You Are a Writer!

Gr 1-3–This book is told in tête-bêche style, where children read You Are A Reader one way and then flip the book over to read You Are A Writer. Encouraging rhyming sentences guide readers through the pages: “Spy a word that makes you scowl? Trips you up with tricky vowels? Stretch that word! Sound it out. Give your letter sounds a scout. You might stumble, you might sigh. But readers practice, grow, and fly!” The reading portion of the book inspires children to keep going despite difficult words that come their way. The writing portion sympathizes with the fact that it can be difficult to find the right words. Throughout the writing process, children are prompted to ask questions and share their drafts with others. Brightly colored illustrations depict children and adults of varying ethnicities reading and writing in little cloud shapes around the page. Artwork appears to be watercolor and ink.
