K-Gr 3–A lyrical ode to the red and wily fox. This picture book poem by former US Poet Laureate Límon captures the simplicity and playfulness of the creature. The narrative and images complement each other as they present one day in the life of the title character. The digital illustrations are set in Kentucky, the poet’s home state. As the boisterous fox travels across the pages, D’Alessandro demonstrates the graceful movement with curvy lines alongside the red fox. Vivid colors—purples, greens, oranges—accompany the spare text, the perfect background for the warm and bright day in which the fox stalks a potential meal, traipses silkily through the verdant grass, and jumps with its peers. The nighttime scenes are just as revealing, as the animal efficiently digs and hunts its prey. Even with its piercing eyes, the fox is never portrayed as something to fear or be disgusted by, but instead as an animal that should be respected and admired.
VERDICT Easily at home in nonfiction, picture book, and poetry collections, this would make a great choice for nature walks or as a precursor to research projects. Animal lovers will fully embrace this tale.
