PreS-Gr 4–Lyrical prose and beautiful, textured illustrations will capture the hearts of readers. Luna is afraid of the night. She doesn’t like the darkness, but following her mother’s suggestion to talk to the night, she is able to learn how to appreciate the night and overcome her fear. One of the best features of this story is the poetic prose, full of similes and imagery. The illustrations work alongside the text, weaving night into a blanket that seems to move and transform with each turn of the page. Night is shown in a variety of creative and nonthreatening ways, to help readers grow more comfortable with one of the most common childhood fears. It even touches on how this concept of coping can be used for any anxiety, not just a fear of the dark. The only difficulty with this text is that the small font in white is difficult to read against the backdrop of some illustrations.
VERDICT Crafted with care, from texts to illustrations, this book will help young readers understand their fears.
