Gr 10 Up—This specialized work has a broad international scope, covering the forces of countries from Australia to Yugoslavia. Signed, informative pieces describe ships by class; discuss specific distinguished battleships, carriers, submarines and other craft; highlight technical innovations from aircraft carriers to radar; and offer information on principle players, weaponry, and battles. The thorough set even outlines never-executed plans such as Operation Downfall (the invasion of Japan). Black-and-white period photos are included with some articles. In certain entries, such as "Evacuation of Dunkirk," a map may have been more useful than a photo for those less acquainted with the event. A chronology, a glossary of naval terms, an extensive bibliography, and a comprehensive index enhance the usefulness of this set. Still, the material is best suited to those with a knowledge of, and keen interest in, World War II naval history.—Patricia N. McClune, Conestoga Valley High School, Lancaster, PA
