Gr 5 Up–Following the promptings from a dream and an unusual encounter with his grandma’s crow friends, Okan (the racoon), an Ojibwe boy, sets out to protect the wolf with antlers recently spotted in the woods near his home from eager hunters. Sarah Mills (skunk) and Marcus Gunth (moose) join him on his quest. The three 13-year-olds are not friends, but each has a reason to hope that the quest will lead them to solutions to their problems. Okan hopes to find comfort about his grandma’s deteriorating health. Sarah hopes to find a solution to the smell that plagues her as well as her dad’s depression. And Marcus, Okan’s former friend turned bully, wants to find a way to earn his parents’ approval. Using the animal cards created by his grandfather and his native beliefs and language, Okan leads the group into the Sawtooth Mountains of Minnesota to find the white wolf. Conflict between the three kids, a bear, and the threat of the hunters puts the quest at risk. Can they put their differences aside long enough to accomplish their mission or are they doomed to fail? Ojibwe culture lies at the heart of the story integrating elements of the past, present and future.
VERDICT An eye-opening window or mirror story for collections that need more stories involving Ojibwe beliefs, relationships, and a touch of the supernatural.
