Gr 3—6—Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and a cast of familiar supporting characters go on a swords-and-sorcery quest. The art is traditional, lively, and colorful, and the story is snappy, making it appealing to young readers. Unfortunately, the personalities of the original characters don't come through: Mickey is uninteresting, Donald is a shadow of his usual grumpy self, and, apart from the occasional "Hyuk," Goofy isn't goofy at all. The plot concerns Mickey and his pals competing in a series of contests to win magic gems. Still, kids ready to gobble up anything and everything Mickey will enjoy this fast-paced title and the competition-based story line will appeal to fans of Pokémon and the like.—Douglas P.
