Gr 7 Up–The witching moon, when a lunar eclipse occurs on the winter solstice, is a unique celestial event that happens only once every 200–500 years. It marks the night when immortals are born—or reborn as the case may be—who must be kept safe until their immortal tribe comes for them. When Anne was born on one such night and her mother died in childbirth, Mama Jane took her in and she was raised in a patchwork adoptive family on Cusabo Island, SC. While all of the children were different, Anne was exceptional and it didn’t take long for her “shine” to make itself known. Anne has the power to heal. It is this power that sets an unlikely adventure in motion when a member of Anne’s immortal tribe, Phillip, shows up looking for her. Phillip tells Anne the danger; he is not the only one looking for Anne, and not all of her pursuers are friendly. The pair is forced to flee in a desperate attempt to return Anne to her ancestral home and her long-lost twin sister. Encounters along the journey will keep many readers interested, however the overall character motivation is, at times, unclear. The main characters are white, with diversity among minor characters.
VERDICT Though a good fit for readers who enjoy stories of adventurous travel, this title will be a second purchase for most libraries.
